In today’s fast-moving digital world, social media has become an important part of students’ daily life. Platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook, and X are used for entertainment, communication, and sharing ideas. While these platforms can be useful for learning and staying connected, excessive use of social media is becoming a serious problem among B.Tech first-year students.

The first year of engineering is a turning point in a student’s life. It is the stage where students start building the foundation of their technical knowledge, personality, discipline, and future career. However, many students spend hours scrolling through reels, watching videos, chatting online, or following trends instead of focusing on academics and self-development.

The first year of engineering is a turning point in a student’s life. It is the stage where students start building the foundation of their technical knowledge, personality, discipline, and future career. However, many students spend hours scrolling through reels, watching videos, chatting online, or following trends instead of focusing on academics and self-development.

One of the biggest problems caused by excessive social media use is loss of concentration. Students often open their phones “for five minutes,” but end up wasting several hours. Continuous exposure to short videos and instant entertainment reduces attention span and affects the ability to study seriously. As a result, students struggle to focus during lectures, practical sessions, and self-study hours.

Recently, India’s Economic Survey 2025-26 also highlighted the growing problem of social media addiction among youth. The report warned that excessive dependence on digital apps and social media is negatively affecting academic performance, productivity, and mental health among students and young people in India.

Another major issue is poor time management. Many engineering students stay awake late at night using social media, which affects sleep quality and physical health. Lack of sleep reduces memory power, energy, and classroom performance. Over time, students may feel stressed, anxious, and mentally exhausted.

The harmful effects of social media are not limited to studies alone. It also affects emotional and social development. Students start comparing their lives with influencers and online personalities. This creates pressure, low confidence, and unnecessary competition. Instead of focusing on personal growth, many students become more interested in gaining likes, followers, and online attention.

In recent months, several incidents in India have shown how uncontrolled digital behavior among students can become dangerous. A shocking case from Chhattisgarh came into news where an engineering student allegedly used AI tools and social media-related content to create obscene images of female classmates. The student was later suspended and arrested. Such incidents clearly show that misuse of technology and social media can seriously harm careers, mental health, and society.

Educational experts across India are also raising concerns. During a student guidance program in Madurai, officials warned that most students spend too much time on social media and very little time on productive learning activities.

Even engineering students themselves are admitting the problem openly. In online student communities, many B.Tech students have shared how endless scrolling and reel addiction reduced their productivity and affected placements and career preparation. One student wrote that social media gave “quick dopamine” but silently destroyed focus and valuable study time.

At Ambalika Institute of Management and Technology, students are encouraged to maintain a healthy balance between technology and academics. The institute believes that technology should be used for innovation, learning, and skill development rather than becoming a distraction. Through technical activities, mentoring, personality development sessions, seminars, and academic guidance, AIMT motivates students to use digital platforms positively and productively.

The institute also focuses on communication skills, teamwork, discipline, and mental well-being so that students grow into responsible professionals. Faculty members continuously guide students to stay focused on their goals and avoid unhealthy digital habits.

Social media is not completely bad if used wisely. It can help students learn new technologies, improve communication, and access educational content. However, discipline and self-control are extremely important, especially during the first year of engineering.

Students must remember that the habits they develop today will shape their future tomorrow. Limited and meaningful use of social media can help them stay confident, productive, and successful in academics as well as professional life.

In the end, real success is not built by scrolling endlessly on screens—it is built through learning, discipline, creativity, and hard work.
